The Need:

Sunflower Sports Complex has served as a hub for youth sports in Topeka, but the facility is no longer keeping pace with the growing demand for quality playing surfaces and expanded programming. The current fields, maintained as best as possible, struggle to withstand the wear and tear of year-round competition. Harsh weather conditions, inconsistent rainfall, and heavy usage take a toll, leading to subpar playing conditions that impact the experience for athletes, coaches, and families.

The impact:

One of the most significant benefits of the Sunflower Sports Complex redesign is the ability to host large-scale tournaments across multiple sports. For years, teams from Topeka and the surrounding region have had to travel to Kansas City, Wichita, and beyond to compete in top-tier events. Those cities have the facilities to attract major tournaments—now, Topeka will, too. This investment will position Sunflower Sports Complex as a premier destination, keeping teams local while drawing visitors from across the region, boosting both our sports community and local economy.

When will construction begin?

Project NextGen will be implemented in phases to maintain operational continuity while allowing for structured construction progress. Each phase will be carefully planned to minimize disruptions, ensuring that key operations can continue as new amenities and infrastructure are constructed.
